3 tips for painting clouds perfectly.

Updated: Nov 19

1. The importance of borders in the sky:

What do we mean by "borders"?

* Rough borders: a rough border defines precisely where one element ends and the next begins. It therefore marks a clear separation between the two elements concerned.

* Soft borders: conversely, a soft border separates two elements in a very gradual way. The color of element A gradually fades until it becomes one with the color of element B, a bit like a color gradient.

2. Atmospheric perspective:

This is a term that we are not used to encountering because it is so specific to today's topic.

* Colors are less intense in the distance, and more intense on objects closer to us.

* Colors are cooler in the distance and warmer in the foreground.

* Contrasts become weaker in the distance.

* The sky is darker above our heads and becomes lighter as we get closer to the horizon.

3. Paint from the most general to the most precise, and know how to adapt your material:

* The idea here is to always focus on fairly large shapes at the beginning of your work, then gradually refine them to finish with the details.

* What interests us here is the material you are going to use to paint your clouds.

* It will be imperative that you use wide brushes at the beginning of your work!

* Just to give you an idea, for a 20 x 24 inch canvas, I recommend that you start with brushes that can be up to 2 inches wide.
